Dentures
Even with the best oral care, as people age, they can be at risk for tooth loss. The bones that support the teeth can weaken with age, and normal wear and tear on the teeth can also contribute to weakness. If someone had poor dental care when they were younger, they may lose teeth to disease as well. Missing teeth can impact your confidence and your ability to chew, but we have a solution.
Whether you are missing one tooth or most of your teeth, dentures can provide the solution to the common problem of missing teeth. Dentures not only restore the appearance of your smile and your confidence but also allow you to chew again without struggle. Valerin Dental Group in Peoria, IL, offers a wide range of denture options to meet the needs of our patients.
How Dentures Work
Dentures are a way to treat tooth loss. Using a combination of plastic resin to look like gum tissue and periprosthetic teeth to replace missing teeth, these devices sit in your mouth to take the place of missing teeth. They can replace all of your teeth or just a few, depending on your specific needs.
Common Types of Dentures
We offer multiple types of dentures at Valerin Dental Group. The right one will depend on the extent of your tooth loss and whether you need and want a permanent solution or a removable one. Here are the types to choose from:
- Partial dentures – Partial dentures fit around your existing, healthy teeth to replace lost teeth without the need to remove your other teeth. If your other teeth are healthy and strong, then this is usually the best alternative to implants to consider.
- Full dentures – For patients with extensive tooth loss, we may recommend removing the remaining teeth and fitting you with full dentures. Full dentures replace all of the teeth in the mouth.
- Immediate dentures – Immediate dentures are provided immediately after extraction while the gum tissue heals. These are secured in the mouth using denture adhesive, and they are removable. Typically, you will remove them for cleaning.
- Implant-retained dentures – These dentures anchor to dental implants placed in your jaw. This style of denture is still removable, but they snap onto the implants when in use. They do not require denture adhesive.
- Implant-supported dentures – This type of denture is a permanent denture that is permanently connected to implants. If you don’t wish to remove your dentures for cleaning but rather want to treat them like natural teeth, and you’re willing to do extensive daily cleaning and flossing, this choice may work well for you.
Getting the Proper Fit
At Valeri Dental Group, our goal is your comfort. We use advanced clinical training and a touch of artistry to create custom dentures that look like they are your natural teeth. We also use molds to ensure a perfect fit for your upper and lower gums. The end result is a natural-looking smile, balanced bite, stabilized chewing, and a better overall look and function to your mouth.
Proper Denture Care
After you have your dentures, you’ll want to ensure you store, clean, and use them properly. Our dental team will walk you through these procedures and answer any questions you have about your new teeth. We also recommend regular checkups to ensure the right fit because tissue shrinkage and bone loss can occur after your initial denture fitting.
